Since I am a terrible mod...

I can't apologize enough for not having posted prompts in so long. I got caught up in getting ready to move and actually moving in November. Now that we're (finally) settled, prompts will be coming weekly, again. This week's prompt will be in another post, but I wanted to take advantage of this time that I have to update with a few things that are going to be changing about the community for 2009.

First, in an attempt to drum up participation in the community, I'm starting monthly writing contests. On the first of each month, beginning in January, I will post a CONTEST PROMPT. We all know how the weekly writing prompts work, because we've read the community rules. For the monthly writing contest, the idea will be to write a work of short fiction. The prompts for the contest will be intended as the first sentence of your writing. Rules for the contest will be as follows:

  • The prompt sentence will be used as the first line of the participant's entry. Entries not using the prompt as the first line will be automatically disqualified.
  • Entries should be no shorter than 500 words, and no longer than 2,500 words. Entries that fall outside of these length guidelines will be automatically disqualified.
  • New prompts will be posted on the first of each month. The deadline for entries will be the last of each month.
  • One runner up and one winner will be selected from entries meeting the qualification criteria for length and prompt usage. Winners will be announced on the 15th of the month following the contest deadline.
  • Since no monetary prizes can be awarded, winners will have bragging rights for one month and the option to help judge the following month's entries, if they so choose.
  • The mod, as the primary judge for the contest, will not be eligible to participate in the contest.

Second, weekly prompts will no longer be posted at midnight on Sunday. They will now be posted at midnight on Wednesday, beginning on Wednesday, December 17th.

Third, in an attempt to make this group as successful as possible, I will be holding weekly write-ins in an AIM chat. Before I can start the write-ins, though, I need answers to the poll in a post to come.

Finally, please, please, PLEASE tell people about the community. I want it to grow by leaps and bounds in 2009. Right now, we have 11 members. I am going to pimp this community like there's no tomorrow, and it would be awesome if everyone else did the same. I'd love nothing more than to see us triple our membership in 2009.
